Pope Francis Urges Global Responsibility in the Pursuit of Peace

Vatican City, December 3, 2024: Pope Francis called on individuals and nations across the globe to take collective responsibility for fostering world peace. He emphasized the need for global dialogue, reconciliation, and urgent action to alleviate suffering in conflict zones such as Gaza, Ukraine, and Lebanon. The Pope’s remarks followed his Angelus prayer at St. Peter's Square on Sunday.

The Holy Father’s appeal comes as the world witnesses a fragile ceasefire between Hezbollah in Lebanon and Israel after nearly 13 months of conflict. The Pope expressed hope that the recently brokered ceasefire could inspire similar resolutions in other global conflicts. However, reports of alleged ceasefire violations, including an Israeli airstrike on a Hezbollah facility, cast doubt on the agreement’s durability. In his address, Pope Francis also urged Lebanese citizens to expedite the election of a president, emphasizing that stable governance is crucial for institutional reforms and the preservation of Lebanon’s unique interfaith coexistence.

Reiterating his stance that “war offends God,” the Pope highlighted the severe humanitarian toll of conflicts worldwide. He renewed his call for the release of Israeli hostages and urged unhindered delivery of aid to Gaza’s embattled population. On Ukraine, he lamented the dire prospects of displaced individuals facing a winter compounded by nearly three years of war.

With the Advent season underway, Pope Francis reminded the faithful that peace requires the collective effort of all, stating, “If desensitization and indifference to the horrors of war prevail, all of humanity is defeated.” His appeal underscores the Vatican’s enduring role in advocating for peace on a global scale.

The Pope also commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Argentina and Chile. Brokered with Vatican mediation under Pope John Paul II, the treaty resolved a territorial dispute and stands as a testament to the power of dialogue over armed conflict.

As the Christmas season approaches, Pope Francis’ message underscores the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing the ongoing crises and reaffirming a commitment to peace.
