One of Arunachal’s First Baptized Catholic Leader Passes Away at 100

Borduria, Arunachal Pradesh, February 1, 2025: Mrs. Senphiak Lowangcha, one of the first individuals to be baptized a Catholic in Arunachal Pradesh, passed away at the age of 100. She was laid to rest today at Mary Help of Christians Church in Borduria, the first Catholic parish in Arunachal Pradesh. A respected elder of the Nocte tribe, Mrs. Lowangcha played a pivotal role in spreading Catholicism in the region and was a key patroness of the Church.

Born in Borduria village, Mrs. Lowangcha’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the Christian history of Arunachal Pradesh. Her eldest son, Mr. James Lowangcha Wanglat, who has served as the state's Home and Finance Minister, is credited with introducing Christianity to modern Arunachal Pradesh. He was baptized on August 20, 1978. A year later, on August 2, 1979, 600 people, including Mrs. Lowangcha, were baptized in a mass baptism ceremony in Borduria.

Fondly known as ‘Vicko’ in Nocte, meaning ‘grandmother,’ Mrs. Lowangcha’s influence and commitment to the Church were instrumental in bringing Mother Teresa to Borduria on August 1 and 2, 1993. Her presence and leadership left an indelible mark on the Catholic community in East Arunachal Pradesh.

The Church mourns her passing, recognizing her lifelong dedication and contributions to the faith. As one of the first baptized Catholics in the state, she leaves behind a legacy of spiritual leadership and commitment to religious growth. The Catholic community in Arunachal Pradesh will deeply miss her presence.

May she rest in peace.
