Catholic Church in Mizoram Inaugurates its Centenary Jubilee

Aizawl, Mizoram, February 1, 2025: The Catholic Church in Mizoram inaugurates the Centenary Jubilee of its existence. Most. Rev. Stephen Rotluanga CSC, Bishop of Aizawl, graced this occasion, and the program was held at Christ the King Cathedral, Aizawl. The theme chosen for this Centenary was "Live and Proclaim your Catholic faith.


Mizoram, North East India, falls under the Diocese of Aizawl, which covers the entire state of Mizoram and a little portion of Assam. The Catholic faith in Mizoram was started by five laypeople, namely, Mr. Lianchheua, Mr. Thangphunga, Mr. Lênga, Mr. Chalchhuna and Mr. Lalbana, on February 1, 1925. They embraced the Catholic faith through the books that they read and the Church grew gradually. From 1947 onwards, the priest permanently resided in Mizoram. In the year 1996, the Episcopal See of Silchar was shifted to Aizawl, Mizoram, which became the Diocese of Aizawl. The present Bishop is Most. Rev. Stephen Rotluanga CSC, DD.


The Catholic Church in Mizoram is now set to celebrate its Centenary (1925-2025). The celebration began at Christ the King Cathedral, Kulikawn, on February 1, 2025, by ringing the Centenary Bell 100 times. It was rung by clergy, religious and the lay faithful. The Bishop opened the Jubilee door and this was followed by the Centenary Theme song presented by the Diocese Choir. The Jubilee Logo and the Centenary Logo were unveiled, and the Centenary candle was also lit by the Bishop. The celebration continued with the solemn Holy Mass offered by Most. Rev. Stephen Rotluanga CSC, Bishop of Aizawl.


A large number of faithful gathered for this important occasion. Different parishes within Mizoram will have a separate inauguration program of the Centenary year in their own parishes on the following Sunday. The celebration will continue throughout this year at different levels. The centenary celebration will reach its culmination towards the end of this year.
