New Monastery of Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration Inaugurated in Sindhudurg

Sindhudurg, August 13, 2025: The Diocese of Sindhudurg marked a momentous and grace-filled occasion on August 9 with the inaugural ceremony of the newly constructed monastery of the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration, a contemplative, cloistered religious order of nuns within the Second Order of St. Francis of Assisi.

The solemn blessing of the Divine Mercy Oratory at the “Divine Mercy Poor Clare Foundation” in Sherle, Banda, Tal. Sawantwadi, Dt. Sindhudurg, Maharashtra, was graced by the presence of His Eminence Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao (Archdiocese of Goa and Daman), Mnsgr. Andrew Dmello (Diocesan Administrator of the Diocese of Sindhudurg), Most Rev. Bishop Emeritus Alwyn Barreto (Diocese of Sindhudurg), Most Rev. Dr. Udumala Bala (Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam), and Mother Abbess Mary Philipa.

The blessing of the altar followed the liturgical rite prescribed in the liturgical books during the Holy Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Cardinal Ferrao and concelebrated by other clergy.

The event brought together several benefactors and well-wishers from far and wide, affirming their love and care for the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration. Clergy, religious, and lay faithful from the Diocese of Sindhudurg and beyond also gathered to witness and take part in the celebration.

Dedicated to the Blessed Sacrament, the Oratory will serve the spiritual needs of the people of God and the Diocese of Sindhudurg, where the sisters will be committed to their mission. Their charism is the perpetual exposition of Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament, with twenty-four-hour adoration at the Divine Mercy Poor Clare Monastery. They follow the Gospel in the footsteps of St. Francis and St. Clare, with a particular emphasis on poverty, simplicity, and love.

The Diocese of Sindhudurg welcomed the Order wholeheartedly and extended prayers for God’s choicest blessings on their future endeavours.

Fr. Milton Monteiro

Judicial Vicar, Diocese of Sindhudurg
