More Than 90,000 Pay Tribute to Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica

VATICAN CITY 25 April 2025 – More than 90,000 people have paid tribute to Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica this week, as the Vatican continues to welcome mourners following the late pontiff’s passing earlier this month. Officials confirmed on Thursday evening that the basilica would remain open late into the night to accommodate the steady flow of visitors.

The atmosphere in St. Peter’s Square has been one of solemn prayer and reflection, with mourners queuing in silence, many clutching rosaries, candles, and personal messages. Pilgrims from around the world—laypeople, clergy, and dignitaries alike—have come to honour a pope remembered for his compassion, simplicity, and unwavering commitment to the poor and marginalised.

The Vatican stated that the basilica will stay open “as long as they keep coming,” underscoring the global outpouring of grief and gratitude. Funeral preparations for the late Holy Father are currently underway.
