Bangalore, 14 March, 2025 – The Karnataka Regional Commission for Migrants has unveiled a strategic action plan aimed at strengthening its ministry for migrants. The initiative was the outcome of a two-day training programme, Discerning Synodal Pathways for the Ministry of Migrants, held on 13–14 March at Paalana Bhavana, Bangalore. The workshop reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to standing in solidarity with migrants, advocating for their rights, and offering pastoral care in times of displacement and uncertainty.
A Call for Compassion and Action
Fr. Siby CMF, Claritian Provincial Councillor, urged the Church to respond with urgency and empathy. “The cry of the migrant must not go unheard. It is our duty to offer healing, hope, and a home wherever they are,” he said.
Discussions during the programme focused on the psychological and emotional toll of migration, highlighting issues such as loneliness, discrimination, isolation, and the trauma of forced displacement. Participants acknowledged the difficulties faced by migrants—many of whom are separated from their families, struggling with legal uncertainties, and enduring harsh living conditions.
A Collaborative Effort for Migrants
The programme, coordinated by the Regional Secretary in partnership with the CCBI Commission for Migrants, featured expert-led sessions on the Church’s pastoral role in migration, Leadership development for migrants, Legal rights and social advocacy, and Mental health support and trauma healing
Prominent speakers included:
• Fr. Mariano Cisco, General Councillor, Congregation of Scalabrinians, Rome
• Fr. Jaison Vadassery, Executive Secretary, CCBI Migrants, Delhi
• Fr. Dr. Charles Leon, Executive Secretary, CCBI VSCR Commission, Bangalore
• Adv. Sr. Rani Punnasseril, Secretary, North Region, Delhi
• Dr. Rashmikant Nayak, Regional Secretary, Commission for Migrants, Chhattisgarh
Additionally, the Catholic Connect media team, led by Dr. Fr. Cyril Victor, trained participants on strengthening the Church’s digital presence. The session focused on digital storytelling and strategic outreach to amplify migrant-related issues.
A Roadmap for Action
A key outcome of the workshop was the formulation of a comprehensive Action Plan to support migrants. The initiatives include:
• Establishing Migrant Ministry Cells in every diocese to offer legal aid, pastoral care, and social support.
• Empowering Migrant Leaders through training programmes to build self-reliant community associations and advocacy networks.
• Strengthening Collaborations with government agencies, NGOs, and labour organisations to improve access to healthcare, education, and social services.
• Leveraging Social Media for awareness campaigns, resource-sharing, and outreach, ensuring migrants stay informed and connected.
• Promoting Mental Health and Well-Being through counselling, trauma healing, and holistic support initiatives.
Commitment to Walk with Migrants
As the workshop concluded, participants reaffirmed their commitment to building an inclusive and compassionate Church. The gathering highlighted the need for policy reforms and grassroots action to address migration challenges.
A strong sense of solidarity echoed in their collective affirmation: “Somebody will help us.” More than words, it was a commitment, a prayer, and a call to action—ensuring no migrant is left behind.
