National BEC Gathering Explores Pastoral Plan and Synodality

Nagpur, 14 March, 2025 – The Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) convened a national meeting of all BEC diocesan directors on 12–13 March at the Pallottine Animation Centre, Nagpur. Centred on the theme BECs as Beacons of Hope, the gathering brought together 12 bishops, 72 priests, six religious members, and 16 laypeople.

The solemn Eucharistic celebration was led by Archbishop Elias Gonsalves of Nagpur. Fr. George Jacob Palackaparambil SAC, Executive Secretary of the BEC Commission for the CCBI outlined the event’s objectives. Each attendee was greeted with a flower, symbolising their place within the wider BEC family.

Delivering a motivational talk, Bishop Emeritus Sebastianappan Singaroyan of Salem underscored BECs as a new way of being a Church and their role in fostering a Synodal Church. Discussions also addressed the challenges facing a Synodal Church and how BECs can offer hope in overcoming them. Participants took part in a ‘Spiritual Conversation’—a structured discussion method that deepened their engagement and spiritual reflection. Many described the experience as spiritually uplifting, enabling them to discern the Holy Spirit’s presence through dialogue.

Sr. Christin Joseph focused on Pilgrimage of Hope and BECs, highlighting the importance of a vibrant, Synodal Church that actively responds to the needs of its members.

Participants also discussed the CCBI pastoral plan, receiving it with enthusiasm and aligning their future action plans with its vision. A key discussion point was the expansion of BECs into Basic Human Communities, promoting interfaith collaboration while remaining aware of the nation’s political climate.

Most Rev. Selvester Ponnumuthan, BEC Chairman of the CCBI, concluded the meeting with an inspiring message, echoing Pope Francis: “Hearts on fire, feet on the move… go and invite. Every BEC is a missionary, and we go out as pilgrims of hope to the world.
