Diocese of Belgaum, Karnataka, Inaugurates Sandhya Kirana, A New Home for Retired Priests

Dharwad, Karnataka, July 11, 2025 — The Diocese of Belgaum marked a significant milestone on 10th July with the inauguration and blessing of Sandhya Kirana, a newly constructed residence dedicated to retired clergy. The event, held in Dharwad during the Monthly Clergy Recollection, was presided over by Dr. Derek Fernandes, Bishop of Belgaum.

In the presence of diocesan clergy and religious sisters, Bishop Derek formally inaugurated the facility and led the blessing ceremony. The newly built Sandhya Kirana, which translates to “Evening Light,” stands as a symbol of peace, dignity, and spiritual rest for priests who have devoted their lives to serving God and His people.

The ceremony began with a brief prayer service, followed by the blessing of the building and its chapel. Bishop Derek emphasised that Sandhya Kirana is not merely a retirement home but a House of Prayer, where priests can spend their later years in serenity, prayer, and ongoing spiritual reflection.

A time of Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction took place in the chapel, further sanctifying the space and invoking God’s presence. Following this, Bishop Derek addressed the gathering, paying tribute to the lifelong dedication of the retired priests and highlighting the diocese’s responsibility to care for them with gratitude and love.

The programme concluded with a short felicitation ceremony, during which Bishop Derek honoured the engineers Mr. Vijay Moogi and Mr. Rajesh Walwekar, who played key roles in the successful construction of the facility. Both were presented with mementoes as tokens of appreciation.

The inauguration of Sandhya Kirana marks a touching and meaningful chapter in the Diocese of Belgaum’s journey, reflecting its deep respect and enduring care for its senior clergy.
