Breaking the Stigma: Simla Chandigarh Diocese Prioritizes Youth Mental Health

Chandigarh, 23 March, 2025 - The Youth Commission of the Simla Chandigarh Diocese held a group discussion on youth mental health on 22nd March, at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre, Chandigarh. The session, led by Bishop Ignatius Loyola Mascarenhas, brought together young people, clergy, and mental health professionals to address the growing concerns surrounding youth mental health.

Participants shared their concerns about the rising mental health challenges faced by young people, including increasing stress, anxiety, and depression. The impact of social media on self-esteem, academic and career pressures, and the stigma surrounding mental health within families and communities were also highlighted.

The session emphasized the need for open conversations, pastoral care, and collaboration with mental health professionals to provide guidance and encourage young people to seek help when needed. The group proposed several initiatives, including regular mental health awareness workshops at parish and diocesan levels, training youth leaders and clergy in mental health first aid, and establishing support networks with counsellors and Catholic mental health organisations.

Youth leaders committed to integrating mental health discussions into programmes, collaborating with professionals, and including mental health resources in diocesan activities. The session reinforced the Church's responsibility in addressing youth mental health and breaking the stigma surrounding it.

According to Bishop Ignatius Loyola Mascarenhas, "The Church has a critical role to play in supporting young people's mental health. We must create safe spaces for them to share their struggles without judgment and provide them with the resources and guidance they need to thrive."

The Youth Commission plans to follow up on the initiatives proposed during the session, working closely with youth leaders, clergy, and mental health professionals to promote mental health awareness and support among young people in the Simla Chandigarh Diocese.
