Asansol Diocese Celebrates Golden and Silver Sacerdotal Jubilees

Asansol, West Bengal, November 6, 2025: The Golden and Silver Sacerdotal Jubilees of Bishop Emeritus Cyprian Monis, Fr. Gerald Machado, and Fr. J. Peter were celebrated by the Diocese of Asansol at St. John’s Church, Chelidanga, bringing together clergy, religious, and hundreds of lay faithful in a heartfelt tribute to their decades of priestly service and dedication.

The Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Golden Jubilarian Bishop Cyprian Monis. Concelebrating were Archbishop Elias Frank of Calcutta and Apostolic Administrator of Asansol Diocese, and Bishop Shyamal Bose of Baruipur, along with over 70 priests. Around 800 faithful — including religious sisters, brothers, and parishioners — participated in the liturgy, reflecting the unity and devotion of the diocesan community.

A traditional Santhali dance marked the opening of the celebration, symbolizing joy, cultural richness, and thanksgiving.

In his homily, Fr. Gerald Machado reflected on the jubilee journey as “a time of grace and gratitude.” He shared,

“We responded to God’s call willingly and wholeheartedly. Though the path was uncertain, His grace remained our light through every joy and trial. We are merely His instruments, and even in our unfaithfulness, He has been faithful.”

Recalling their missionary calling to West Bengal, he added,

“God uprooted us from our homeland and planted us here to serve His people. We remain grateful to our parents, formators, friends, and the Archdiocese of Calcutta and Diocese of Asansol for their steadfast support.”

A felicitation program followed, honoring the Jubilarians for their years of priestly service. Children, youth, and women of the parish presented a cultural program, while a digital presentation captured significant moments from the Jubilarians’ lives and ministry.

Expressing gratitude on behalf of the Jubilarians, Bishop Cyprian Monis thanked the bishops, clergy, religious, and faithful for their prayers and companionship throughout their priestly journey.
