Vasai, Maharashtra, May 9, 2025: In a moment filled with grace and divine timing, Fr. (Dr.) Ramesh D’Souza of the Diocese of Vasai released a powerful and prayerful English hymn titled “Give Us a Shepherd, O Lord” on May 9. The song, written during the sacred time of the papal conclave on May 7, is a heartfelt plea to the Holy Spirit to guide the Church in choosing a new Pope — a shepherd after the heart of Christ.
What makes this hymn especially significant is the timing of its recording. As the song was being recorded in the studio on May 8, news arrived that white smoke had risen from the Sistine Chapel — a sign to the world that a new pope had been elected. It felt as though heaven had responded in real time to the prayer being offered up in song.
A stanza from the song is as follows:
“Give us a shepherd, O Lord, we pray,
To guide us in truth and show us the way,
With mercy and courage, let him be,
A light of Christ for the world to see.”
Fr. D’Souza, known for his deep spirituality and musical gift, reflected:
“It felt as though the Holy Spirit was among us. Just as we ended the recording of our humble prayer song asking the Lord for a shepherd, the white smoke appeared. It was a moment of awe — a divine confirmation. We recorded until 12:30 a.m. on May 9, and during the session, we received the news that Cardinal Robert Prevost had been elected Pope — now Pope Leo XIV.”
Fr. Ramesh added that he and his team spent the entire day today preparing the video of the song and planning for its release.
More than a song, “Give Us a Shepherd, O Lord” is a testimony of faith, surrender, and the palpable presence of God. It invites Catholics worldwide to reflect, pray, and rejoice in the assurance that God never leaves His flock unattended.
