Kerala, India, 9 May, 2025– As the global Church welcomes its new shepherd, Pope Leo XIV, the Augustinian congregation in India expresses immense joy and pride. The Pope, who has visited India twice—in 2004 and 2006—holds a special place in the hearts of the community.
His 2006 visit remains particularly significant, as he presided over the ordination of six Augustinian priests. Among them was Fr. Bosco, who fondly recalls the moment: “I am extremely happy. I was one of the six priests ordained that day. What makes it even more special is that the one who laid hands on us and blessed us—our then-General—is now the Pope.”
Fr. Bosco adds, “On this joyous occasion, we pray for Pope Leo XIV and ask that he be granted abundant blessings and wisdom.”
A fellow priest who accompanied the then-General during the 2006 ordination also shared his reflections. “We were young Augustinians, just starting out and facing many challenges,” he said. “But he always motivated and guided us. He showed us how to follow Jesus through both his words and his life. Today, we send him our heartfelt congratulations.”
Fr. Wilson, who had just entered the seminary in 2006, also remembers the Pope’s personal touch. “He came to speak with us seminarians warmly and kindly. And again, when we met him this February—then as a Cardinal—he served us dinner, spoke with us, and even collected our plates. He enquired about the Augustine Fathers in India. His humility and simplicity have always stood out.”
Reflecting on the hopes of the Indian Catholic community, Fr. Wilson noted the unfulfilled desire for a papal visit from Pope Francis. However, he remains hopeful about Pope Leo XIV. “We believe Pope Leo XIV will come to India, particularly Kerala. When we met in February, he mentioned that while he couldn’t return to India after becoming Cardinal, he would certainly consider attending any future ordinations or events. Though circumstances have changed, we hold onto that hope.”
The Augustinian community in India now looks forward to a potential papal visit with renewed anticipation, cherishing the deep bond they share with Pope Leo XIV.
