In a striking moment of continuity and symbolism, Pope Leo XIV has succeeded Pope Francis, choosing a name that resonates deeply with Catholic tradition. The new Pontiff has cited Leo XIII as his primary inspiration—best known for his efforts to engage with the modern world and for issuing Rerum Novarum, the landmark encyclical that laid the foundation for the Church’s social teaching. Now, Pope Leo XIV looks to extend that legacy, particularly as the Church navigates the complexities of modernity, including the rise of Artificial Intelligence.
While much has been said about the significance of the name “Leo” in relation to papal history, less attention has been given to the spiritual connection between Saint Francis of Assisi and Brother Leo—an extraordinary bond that offers a profound parallel to today’s papal transition.
Brother Leo, though not the first follower of Francis, became his closest companion—serving as his disciple, friend, secretary, and caregiver. A native of Assisi, Leo remained by Francis’s side through challenges and triumphs alike. He wrote letters on Francis’s behalf, accompanied him to meet the Pope, and witnessed the miraculous stigmata on Mount Alvernia. When Francis fell ill, it was Leo who cared for him. Following Francis’s death, Leo worked tirelessly to unify the early Franciscan movement—an immense and difficult task. Today, Brother Leo lies buried beside Francis in the shrine at Assisi, a testament to their enduring spiritual bond.
This succession—Francis followed by Leo—feels almost providential. It echoes the relationship between the saint and his devoted follower, offering the Church not just continuity but a living symbol of companionship in mission. Before their papacies, both Popes had known and worked with each other within the Vatican. Now, one continues the work from heaven, and the other from the heart of Rome.
For Catholics around the world, this moment offers both joy and hope. The Spirit of Assisi, rooted in humility, service, and fraternity, continues to inspire the Church’s life and mission under the guidance of Pope Leo XIV.
