New Delhi, 2 June 2025: India recorded 3,961 active Covid-19 cases as of Monday morning, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with Delhi reporting the highest single-day surge of 47 new infections and one fatality. The nationwide tally saw 203 new cases in the past 24 hours, while Kerala continued to report the highest number of active cases.
Delhi’s total caseload has now reached 483, with the latest fatality being a 22-year-old woman who had a pre-existing lung condition. This brings the capital's Covid-related death toll for 2025 to four.
Kerala remains the most affected state, accounting for 1,435 active cases, followed by Maharashtra (506), Delhi (483), West Bengal (339), and Gujarat (338). Other fatalities reported in the last 24 hours include a 25-year-old man in Tamil Nadu and a 44-year-old man in Maharashtra. Kerala also recorded one death, with further details awaited.
Despite the recent uptick in the number of cases, central government officials have emphasised that the situation is under control. "The severity of infections remains low, with most patients recovering in home isolation. There is no cause for concern at this time," a government source stated.
On Monday, Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), noted that genome sequencing from affected regions identified four Omicron subvariants—LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1—as responsible for the current increase. The variants, primarily found in the western and southern states, have not been linked to severe illness.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed.
