Christian Leaders Demand Security, Political Voice at Pune Conference

Pune, June 2, 2025: The 6th Christian Rights Conference, organised by the Regional Christian Society (RCS), was inaugurated in Pune on Sunday, June 1. Held under the leadership of RCS President Prashant (Lucas) Kedari, the event brought together religious leaders of various faiths, political representatives, social activists, and community members from across Maharashtra to discuss the challenges faced by Christians in the state.

In his opening address, Mr. Kedari underscored the severity of the challenges faced by Christians in Maharashtra. He called for the formation of a state-level security committee, a dedicated Christian corporation, and fair political representation for Christians in the state. He also condemned the filing of false cases against members of the Christian community and demanded an end to such defamation.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson strongly criticised the rising instances of violence and false allegations of religious conversions targeting members of the Christian community in India. He referenced various incidents, including the unrest in Manipur, the injustice faced by Fr. Stan Swamy, and attacks on churches, schools, and pastors, calling them grave violations of constitutional rights. He stressed the need to revitalise the Minority Commission and announced the formation of a national committee to work toward the community’s empowerment. He also advocated for constitutional benefits for Dalit Christians and pledged support for securing political representation in Maharashtra.

Conference chair Dilip Naik proposed practical steps to strengthen unity within the community and announced plans to launch a statewide movement, demanding greater political representation for Christians in Maharashtra. He also revealed plans for a state-level Christian convention in the near future.

MLA Bapusaheb Pathare voiced his support for the community and promised help in establishing a cultural centre and an economic development corporation. Former Deputy Mayor Dr. Siddharth Dhende, along with leaders from the Ambedkarite and Muslim communities, expressed solidarity with the Christian community in their fight for justice.

Fr. Joe Gaikwad shared a vision for empowering the Christian community, while Fr. Peter George opened the conference with a prayer. Fr. Kelkar urged the formation of a committee dedicated to securing justice for oppressed Christians.

Several speakers, including advocates Bajirao Dalvi and Anton Kadam, emphasised the need to secure constitutional benefits for Christians, including those who have converted from other faiths.

The conference also honoured Christian social activists Naresh Chavan and Lawrence Gaikwad for their contributions to the welfare of Christians. Organisations such as the SFS Marathi Organisation, Yave Nissi Christian Organisation, and Apostle Foundation were also felicitated, while Deepak Chakranarayan received recognition for his work with orphaned children.

Maharashtra State Minority Affairs Minister Dattatray Bharne sent his greetings virtually and pledged to address the community’s concerns. Bishop Thomas Dabre also extended his support through an online message.
