Chennai, 1 May 2025:In a rare and reverent convergence of faith and governance, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru M.K. Stalin today paid homage to Pope Francis at a solemn memorial service held at Loyola College, Chennai. The tribute was jointly organised by the Tamil Nadu Conference of Religious (TNCR) and the Jesuit Chennai Province, bringing together prominent religious and political leaders.
The Chief Minister offered floral tributes at the portrait of Pope Francis, honouring the global spiritual leader's legacy of compassion, inclusion, and justice. The event marked a significant moment of respect for the head of the Catholic Church from one of India's leading secular leaders.
Also present were Member of Parliament for Minorities Thiru Dayanidhi Maran, MLAs Thiru Inigo Irudayaraj and Maru. N. Ezhilan, Greater Chennai Corporation Standing Committee Chairman Thiru Ne. Chitrarasu, and Chairman of the Tamil Nadu State Minorities Commission Rev. Fr. Joe Arun.
From the religious and academic communities, notable attendees included Loyola College Principal Rev. Fr. Robinson, Jesuit Provincial Rev. Fr. Jebamalai Raja, Superior General of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Sr. Arockiam, and TNCR President Sr. Philomena, along with other administrators and clergy.
The event served not only as a tribute to Pope Francis but also as a testament to Tamil Nadu’s tradition of religious harmony and mutual respect.
