Shimoga, August 27, 2025 – In a heartfelt initiative to foster hope, compassion, and human connection among the incarcerated, the Shimoga Diocesan Unit of Prison Ministry India organised a special programme on August 25 to commemorate Independence Day and Rakshabandhan at the Central Prison, Shivamogga.

Students of St. Charles Kannada Higher Primary School, New Town, Bhadravathi, performed a prayer dance, setting a vibrant and devotional tone. Sr. Helen Moras, Coordinator for Prison Ministry India, Shimoga Diocesan Unit, welcomed the dignitaries, prison staff, and inmates, acknowledging the significance of the occasion.

The programme was graced by Mrs. Preethi R, Assistant Superintendent of the Central Prison, alongside Jailors Mr. S.S. Kattimani, Mrs. Sushma, Mr. Vijay Kumar, and Mr. Sharanabasappa. Teachers involved included Mrs. Leela from the prison, and Mrs. Savitha, Mrs. Agnes, and Mrs. Mathamma from St. Charles Higher Primary School.

A series of cultural performances by forty-two schoolchildren proved to be the highlight of the event, bringing smiles and cheer to everyone present. Following this, Mrs. Preethi R delivered an empathetic and encouraging address to the inmates, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendance.

One of the most poignant moments of the programme was the Rakhi-tying ceremony, where students tied Rakhis to the inmates, symbolising brotherhood, care, and emotional solidarity. The gesture moved many inmates, creating an atmosphere of warmth and mutual respect.

The smooth execution of the programme was made possible through the commendable support of the prison administration, including the Assistant Superintendent, Jailors, and the inmates themselves.

The Shimoga Diocesan Prison Ministry unit expressed profound gratitude to Bishop Francis Serrao SJ of Shimoga, for generously sponsoring the programme. Appreciation was also extended to Dr. Ranganath, Superintendent of the Central Prison, Shivamogga, for granting necessary permissions, as well as to Sr. Margaret D’Silva, Headmistress of St. Charles Kannada Higher Primary School, for coordinating student participation, and Sr. Rossamma, Principal of Nirmala School of Nursing, for providing transport arrangements.

The Prison Ministry India – Shimoga Diocesan Unit prays for continued divine blessings on its endeavours to bring hope, enlightenment, and compassion to those in custody.
