Prison Ministry India Opens International Convention in Kerala

Kerala , 30 October, 2025: The International Convention of Prison Ministry India (PMI) opened with solemnity and hope on 29 October 2025 at NESTT, Muvattupuzha, Kerala, under the theme “Fallen Humans May Rise Again on Wings of Prayer.” The historic gathering marked a new milestone in the mission of PMI, reaffirming its dedication to faith, rehabilitation, and restoring human dignity among those behind bars.

In his introductory address, Fr. Francis Kodiyan MCBS, Co-Founder of PMI and CBCI Secretary to PMI, recalled the humble beginnings of the ministry and its transformative journey across India. He highlighted the selfless service of countless volunteers who have brought Christ’s compassion and the Church’s mercy to prisoners nationwide, working tirelessly for their spiritual and social reintegration.

Bishop George Madathikandathil of Kothamangalam, and Sr. Amala DC, National Secretary of PMI, extended a warm welcome to all participants. A symbolic act of watering a plant represented the renewal and growth that faith and service continue to nurture within prison walls.

Delivering the Inaugural Address, Cardinal Anthony Poola of Hyderabad, commended PMI for its witness to God’s mercy. “Every prisoner is a human being with a divine spark,” he said. “Through faith and compassion, we help them rediscover that light.” The Cardinal also captivated participants by singing a Telugu hymn, filling the gathering with devotion and emotion. He lauded Fr. Francis Kodiyan MCBS for his exemplary leadership in prison rehabilitation, reflecting the mission of Jesus to forgive and renew.

A message from Cardinal Philip Neri was read by Fr. Savio from Goa, conveying blessings and encouragement for the continuing mission of PMI.

In his Presidential Address, Fr. Jose Pulickal, CBCI Chairperson for PMI, reminded participants that “true freedom is found in forgiveness and conversion.” Cardinal Poola and Bishop Pulickal jointly released the book “From Captivity to Calling – The Legacy of Prison Ministry India,” authored by Fr. Francis Kodiyan MCBS, chronicling the movement’s journey and vision.

Several other notable publications were released during the event:

“An Inner Spiritual Journey Through Prison Walls” by Sr Marina Gulati CSJ, released by Fr. Peter Remigius, former CBCI Chairperson for PMI.

“Chains to Wings – Stories of Grace from Prison Ministry” by Sr Sherly Kidangan OSB, released by Most Rev. Mar George Punnakkottill, Bishop Emeritus of Kothamangalam.

“Understanding Crime, Prison and Forensics” by Prof. Edmund Frank, released by Fr Mathew Koyickal, CBCI Deputy Secretary General, along with Fr Varghese Karippery.

Each publication added to PMI’s holistic mission—integrating spirituality, psychology, criminology, and pastoral care in its approach to rehabilitation.

A special felicitation honoured Mr Mathew Albin for his outstanding service and lifelong dedication to prison ministry.

The opening of the Jubilee Convention stood as a powerful testament to the Church’s unyielding commitment to mercy. It echoed the enduring truth proclaimed by Pope Francis: “There is no cell in the world that can be isolated from God’s love and mercy.”
