Vatican City, October 22, 2025: Pope Leo addressed the faithful at his Wednesday General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, emphasising the Resurrection of Christ as a transformative force against sadness.
The Pope described the Resurrection as “an event that one never finishes contemplating and meditating on,” drawing believers into an “overwhelming yet fascinating light.” He identified sadness as a pervasive modern challenge, noting, “Intrusive and widespread, sadness accompanies the days of many people,” robbing life of meaning and vigour.
Citing the Gospel of Luke’s account of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, Pope Leo highlighted their despondency after Jesus’ death, marked by an all-encompassing sadness. He explained that Jesus’ appearance and words, culminating in the breaking of bread, rekindled hope, reopening “the eyes of the heart, illuminating once again the vision clouded by despair.”
The Pope underscored the tangible reality of the Resurrection, stating, “The victory of life is not an empty word, but a real, tangible fact,” as evidenced by Christ’s crucified body. He encouraged the faithful to draw from this hope, suggesting that “Jesus, the Risen One, drastically changes our perspective,” dispelling sadness and inspiring goodness in history.
