Pope Leo XIV Urges Guidance For Young People in Age of Artificial Intelligence

Vatican City, 5 December 2025 — Pope Leo XIV has called for new generations to be helped and guided in their engagement with new technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), urging widespread participation in efforts to support young people’s maturity, responsibility and ability to derive meaning and value from the digital world.

Addressing participants in the Conference “Artificial Intelligence and Care for Our Common Home” on 5 December, the Pope highlighted how rapid changes brought about by AI profoundly affect society, daily life and aspects of the human person such as critical thinking, learning and interpersonal relationships. He said that the well-being of society depends on young people’s ability to develop their talents and respond generously to the needs of others with freedom of mind.

Pope Leo also emphasised that accessing vast amounts of data should not be confused with the ability to extract meaning and truth from it, and he invited educators, institutions, businesses and religious communities to help young people use these technologies wisely. He stressed that human beings are called to be co-workers in creation rather than passive consumers of content generated by AI, and that development of digital tools needs coordinated action involving politics, education and civil society.

The Pope posed questions about the ethical implications of technological progress, asking how AI can truly serve the common good and not merely concentrate wealth and power in the hands of a few. He also highlighted the importance of safeguarding the freedom, inner life and balanced growth of children and young people as humanity adapts to the challenges of this emerging technological era.
