Vatican City, 5 December 2025 — Pope Leo XIV has encouraged cardiologists attending the Paris Course on Revascularisation to uphold a balanced approach that combines scientific excellence with compassion and ethical responsibility, saying that healing the human heart involves both physical care and a deeper, spiritual dimension.
Welcoming participants at the Vatican, the Pope acknowledged the significant contribution of those in the field of interventional cardiology, noting that their work stands at “the crossroads of science, compassion and ethical responsibility”. He highlighted how each medical act should be rooted in the service of life, underscoring that every heartbeat entrusted to their care is a reminder that life is “a gift, always a mystery to be reverenced”.
Pope Leo referenced Evangelium Vitae and pointed to Christ’s tenderness towards the sick as a model to inspire medical professionals in serving the vulnerable. He emphasised that advances in cardiovascular treatment must be shared widely and remain accessible, especially to the poor and marginalised, rather than becoming a privilege for a select few.
Bringing his message to a close, the Pope entrusted the cardiologists’ work to the Sacred Heart of Jesus — whom he described as “physician of souls and bodies” — and expressed his hope that they may continue to couple scientific expertise with a genuine commitment to serve humanity. He prayed that they be granted “courage, perseverance and joy” in their demanding work.
