Pope Leo XIV Reunites with Augustinian Brothers on Feast of Our Lady of Fatima

Vatican, 14 May, 2025: On the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima, Pope Leo XIV made a heartfelt return to the General Curia of the Order of Saint Augustine, where he once lived and served as Prior General. Celebrating Mass and sharing lunch with the Augustinian brothers, the Pope’s visit was both a spiritual and familial homecoming.

Shortly before noon, Pope Leo arrived at the Curia on Via Paolo VI, a short drive from the Vatican. For 12 years — from 2001 to 2013 — this was the place he called home, and his return was marked by a sense of warmth and continuity. As a cardinal, he had often joined the brothers for meals, and this day’s visit reflected the same spirit of fraternity.

At the heart of the Augustinian tradition is community life, rooted in the Rule of Saint Augustine, which calls friars to live “with one heart and one soul directed toward God.” This principle was vividly present as the Pope was welcomed back into the familiar setting of shared prayer and table.

Despite an unexpected thunderstorm, hundreds gathered outside the Curia gates hoping to catch a glimpse of the Pope. Around 3:00 p.m., as he departed, he paused to warmly greet those who had waited patiently in the rain.

Speaking to Vatican News, Fr Alejandro Moral, the current Prior General, described the visit as “very warm and informal, a gesture of gratitude.” The Pope presided over Mass in the Curia’s chapel before joining the community for lunch. “He used to eat here regularly and wanted to thank the community for that,” Fr Moral said, adding, “He knows everyone, and we all know him — that made it especially meaningful.”

The visit extended beyond formalities. Pope Leo took time to meet with workers and kitchen staff, sharing moments with those who support daily life at the Curia. The Prior General noted the joy and appreciation felt throughout the community.

Before departing, Pope Leo offered words inspired by Saint Augustine, urging the brothers to “stay close to one another, and live in communion.” His message served as both a blessing and a reminder of their shared vocation — to journey together in faith and unity.
