Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai Sworn in as 52nd Chief Justice of India

New Delhi, 14 May 12025: Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday, 14 May 2025.


He becomes the first Buddhist to hold the position of Chief Justice of India. Taking his oath in Hindi, Justice Gavai pledged to uphold the Constitution and carry out his duties with integrity.


Known as a bold and decisive judge who speaks his mind, Justice Gavai has been part of several landmark decisions at the Supreme Court, including the upholding of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution and the striking down of the electoral bonds scheme.


Throughout his judicial career, Justice Gavai has delivered approximately 300 judgments, including key Constitution Bench decisions that have reinforced the rule of law and protected the fundamental, human, and legal rights of citizens. He has served on around 700 Benches, dealing with matters ranging from constitutional issues to environmental law.


Chief Justice Gavai will serve a tenure of just over six months, concluding on 23 November 2025.


He was appointed to the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019, following his tenure at the Bombay High Court.
