Pope Leo XIV Meets US Vice President Vance, Discusses Bilateral Relations and Global Issues

VATICAN CITY – May 19, 2025 — Pope Leo XIV held a private audience on Monday with United States Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Vatican, according to a statement issued by the Holy See Press Office. During the meeting, the Holy Father discussed several issues with the two American leaders, including U.S.-Holy See relations, religious freedom, and current international conflicts. The audience, which was also attended by the spouses of both U.S. officials, marked the first official diplomatic engagement between the newly elected pope and high-ranking representatives of the U.S. government.

Following his meeting with the Pope, Vice President Vance held further discussions with Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations. The talks were described as “cordial” by the Holy See Press Office.

Both parties highlighted the strength of existing diplomatic relations and explored opportunities for continued collaboration between the Catholic Church and the United States. Key topics discussed included the promotion of religious freedom, support for ecclesial life, and joint humanitarian initiatives.

The parties also exchanged views on pressing global issues, including armed conflicts around the world. They expressed a shared hope that international and humanitarian law would be upheld and that peaceful, negotiated solutions could be pursued in regions facing instability.
