Pope Leo: “Death Never Has the Last Word”

Vatican City, October 20, 2025 — Pope Leo has offered heartfelt words of consolation to a father grieving his son’s death, reminding him that “death never has the last word.”

Responding in a personal letter published in Piazza San Pietro magazine, the Pope addressed Francesco, who wrote about losing his 12-year-old son, Domenico Maria, following a sudden illness 18 years ago.

He encouraged the father to remain “always connected to the Lord” and assured him that God’s grace endures even “in the darkest moments.”

Pope Leo emphasised that baptism “introduces us into communion with Christ and gives us true life,” and that the hope of resurrection transcends suffering and loss. “But death never has the last word!” he wrote.

He poignantly compared authentic prayer to sport, saying that just as teammates form bonds that last beyond competition, shared spiritual life forges connections “that go far beyond death.”
