Castel Gandolfo, July 14, 2025 — At the conclusion of the Sunday Angelus in Castel Gandolfo, Pope Leo XIV appealed for prayers for peace and for all those suffering as a result of violence and war. His message echoed the themes of his homily earlier that morning, in which he emphasized how violence and poverty wound lives and destroy dreams.
Following his Angelus catechesis, the Pope invited the faithful to remember those affected by conflict and to stand in solidarity with those in need. His appeal came after a morning Mass celebrated at the nearby parish of Saint Thomas of Villanova, where he reflected on the parable of the Good Samaritan.
Arriving on foot, Pope Leo appeared on the traditional red platform in front of the Apostolic Palace, the same one used by his predecessors. He expressed joy at being in Castel Gandolfo and warmly thanked the crowds for their welcome.
Heroic Witness of Blessed Licarion May
The Pope also recalled the beatification held a day earlier, on Saturday, July 12, in Barcelona, of Marist Brother Licarion May—born François Benjamin—who was killed during the 1909 uprisings out of hatred for the faith. Highlighting his courageous and passionate dedication to education among the poor, Pope Leo prayed that his witness might inspire all, especially those serving in the field of education.
Tribute to Youth Leaders and Educators
Continuing his reflections on education, Pope Leo expressed gratitude to youth leaders and educators who dedicate their summer months to accompanying young people. He also made special mention of the Giffoni Film Festival in Italy’s Salerno province, calling it an “important initiative” that brings together children and teens from around the world. This year’s edition, beginning on July 17, is themed “Becoming Human.”
Applause for Italy’s Carabinieri
In his final greetings, Pope Leo acknowledged several groups among the crowd, including participants in the Summer Course of the Liturgical Academy from Poland, pilgrims from the Parish of San Pedro Apóstol in Spain's Diocese of Alcalá de Henares marking their 400th anniversary, Augustinian nuns in formation, and the Choir from the Académie Musicale de Liesse in France.
Addressing cadets from the Carabinieri School of Velletri, named after the Venerable Salvo D’Acquisto, the Pope encouraged them to persevere in their service to the nation and civil society. He concluded by inviting all present to offer a round of applause in appreciation of their service.
