Rome, November 20, 2024: Pope Francis released Sarveśa, a Sanskrit rendition of the Lord’s Prayer, at a grand event in Rome. Produced by Chetana Ganashram, Thrissur, the song was created to aid brain development in children with autism, cerebral palsy, and mental challenges through Neurologic Music Therapy. The lyrics, drawn from the Sanskrit work Kristubhāgavatham by late Prof. P. C. Devassia, were set to music by Fr. Dr. Paul Poovathingal CMI and Grammy-winning violinist Manoj George. The song features the voices of Padma Vibhushan Dr. K. J. Yesudas, Fr. Poovathingal, 100 priests, and 100 nuns.
This first-of-its-kind release by the Pope marks a unique fusion of Indian and Western musical traditions. Composed in the Carnatic raga Natabhairavi, Sarveśa blends classical Indian and Western elements, with an orchestra conducted by Manoj George and additional instrumental contributions from Rakesh Chaurasia and Hollywood musicians. The song was recorded and mastered in studios across Mumbai, Florida, and Los Angeles, with co-production by Grammy-winning composer Ricky Kej.
Fr. Poovathingal, speaking to Catholic Connect, explained the choice of Sanskrit, saying, “As Christians, we have deeply inculturated ourselves into local traditions. This project highlights the rich Indian Christian culture, integrating language, music, and spirituality in a harmonious way.”
Despite challenges, including assembling 100 priests and nuns and navigating logistical hurdles, the team felt guided by divine providence. “Every step was a testament to God’s grace, from collaborations to reaching Pope Francis,” Fr. Poovathingal shared.
The release ceremony, where Pope Francis signed a plaque, was a historic milestone for Indian Christian culture and global spirituality. Proceeds from the song will support therapeutic programs at Chetana Ganashram, underscoring its mission to uplift the differently-abled.
This artistic and spiritual collaboration is a testament to the universality of music and prayer, blending cultural traditions to inspire faith and healing.
