Pope Francis Calls for Unity Among Religions to Build Bridges of Peace

Vatican, January 17, 2025: Pope Francis underscored the urgent need for interreligious dialogue and cooperation to heal divisions in a world plagued by conflict as he met with a delegation of the Bektashi Order of Dervishes from Albania. The Pope expressed his belief that religious leaders, when united in mutual respect and a shared commitment to fostering a culture of encounter, can inspire a better and more just world. He made these remarks during a meeting at the Vatican, where the Bektashi delegation was led by His Grace Haxhi Baba Edmond Brahimaj.

The Bektashi Order, a renowned Sufi Muslim group founded in 13th-century Anatolia, has deep historical ties to the Catholic Church, particularly through the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue. The order is known for its focus on love, tolerance, and spiritual enlightenment, fostering friendly relations with various religious communities, including Catholics. Pope Francis hailed these fraternal relationships as a “blessing” and expressed confidence that they would continue to strengthen, promoting peace and fraternity in an increasingly polarized world.

The Pope recalled past collaborative moments, including the Prayer for Peace in the Balkans during the 1993 war and the 2011 World Day of Prayer for Peace in Assisi. These events, the Pope noted, “can serve as a bridge of reconciliation and mutual enrichment,” especially between the East and West. Pope Francis further emphasized that in a time marked by violence and discord, religious convictions can serve as a powerful force for embracing shared values of friendship and cooperation.

In his conclusion, Pope Francis reaffirmed the essential role of interreligious dialogue in creating a future of peace, justice, and reconciliation. He encouraged believers, particularly the youth, to continue pursuing these values to fulfill the global desire for harmony and understanding.
