One-Day Seminar on Human Values and Lay Participation in the Church held in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, August 19, 2025 – A one-day seminar on “Human Values” and “The Role of the Laity in the Church” brought together 60 enthusiastic college students from four city parishes at the Pastoral Centre, Hyderabad. Organised with the support of Signis and the blessings of His Eminence Cardinal Poola Anthony, the event combined faith, intellect and youthful energy in a remarkable way.

The morning session featured inputs from Mr. M.D. Vincent of Hima Bindu and Dr. Dusi Devraaj, S.J., who delivered a captivating PowerPoint presentation interwoven with eloquent discourse and soulful songs. Fr. Dusi Ravisheker followed with a scholarly presentation centred on Fraternity, which resonated deeply with participants. Students expressed gratitude for the fresh insights they had gained and pledged to foster unity and brotherhood within their communities.

Interactive group discussions encouraged students to reflect and present their learnings. The top four presentations received prizes, concluding the morning on a spirited note. Organisers extended special thanks to Fr. Jerome, Youth Director of the Archdiocese, and Fr. Prabhudas, Director of the Pastoral Centre, along with the parish priests of St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Band Lines, Kairathabad and St. Thomas, for their encouragement and support.

The afternoon session was highlighted by a lecture from Dr. Gurram Prathap Reddy of Karunya Cultural Arts on “The Role of Lay People in the Church.” Delivering an uninterrupted and powerful address, Dr. Reddy captivated the audience despite language differences. While many students came from English-speaking backgrounds, they expressed deep appreciation for the history of the Telugu Church and the sacrifices of its early Christians. In a moving tribute, students presented their summaries of his research in Telugu, demonstrating both understanding and admiration.

The session concluded with the recognition of the four best student reports, honoured by Rev. Fr. Pappula Sudhakar, President of Signis Telugu Region. His presence added encouragement for young voices taking active roles in the life of the Church.

The day ended with a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Jerome, drawing the seminar to a close with prayer and thanksgiving.

The seminar not only deepened the students’ understanding of human fraternity but also highlighted the essential role of laypeople in the Church’s mission. It reflected a vision for an inclusive, value-driven Christian community, where faith and action walk hand in hand.
