On 16th June, the Holy Family Sisters in Goa, India, joyfully celebrate 90 years since their foundation. A solemn Eucharistic Celebration will be held at 4:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Chapel, Sancoale, presided over by Simão P. Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman. The occasion honours the vision of their founder, Fr. Faustino de Souza, whose dream of an indigenous congregation took root and blossomed into a legacy of faith and service.
A Vision Revived
Religious life in Goa had been suppressed in 1833 by King Dom Pedro of Portugal. Nearly a century later, recognising the spiritual void, Fr. Faustino envisioned a congregation for Goan women. His mission gained strength with the changing political climate under Salazar. In collaboration with the Bethany Sisters of Mangalore, four young women began their formation in 1933.
On 16th June 1935, the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth was officially born as the first sisters professed their vows—marking a new chapter in Goa’s religious life.
Growth and Recognition
The Church granted canonical recognition in 1952 and approved the congregation’s Constitutions. These have been revised over time to stay rooted in Church law while remaining relevant to modern needs.
Mission of Love and Service
The Sisters’ charism is “sharing God’s providential love by serving the poor and needy.” Their mission includes education, evangelisation, pastoral care, and social justice. They run schools, homes for the aged, and support programmes for women and children, such as Asha Sadan, Divya Gyan, Nazareth Jeevandhara, and Kiran Niketan. They are also involved in prison ministry and diocesan initiatives.
Reaching Beyond Borders
From their beginnings in Goa, the Sisters have expanded to serve in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, and beyond. Their presence in diverse regions highlights their continuing relevance and dedication.
Milestones of Grace
The Golden Jubilee of their canonical erection was celebrated in 2002. The ongoing profession of perpetual vows by new members shows the vitality and strength of their vocation, rooted in Gospel values and service.
A Living Legacy
As they mark 90 years, the Holy Family Sisters stand as a symbol of resilience, faith, and hope. From humble beginnings, they have become a beacon of love and compassion—shaping lives and inspiring future generations with their enduring witness.
