Goa’s First Parish Women’s Cell Inaugurated at St. Francis Xavier Church, Chicalim

Chicalim, Goa, July 28, 2025 – The Parish of St. Francis Xavier Church, Chicalim, came alive with warmth and celebration as it became the first among 162 parishes in Goa to officially inaugurate a Parish Women’s Cell on 24 July. The historic event, held on the evening of 24 July, was graced by the Diocesan Women’s Commission and parish delegates.

The Diocesan Women’s Commission of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, functioning under the Diocesan Centre for Lay Apostolate, has long aimed to establish sustainable women’s cells across parishes to empower women within the Church. Under the guidance of Parish Priest Fr. Bolmax Pereira and Fr. Francis Xavier Pereira, the SFX Parish representative from the Mormugao deanery mobilised a committed team of strong, well-qualified, and dedicated women to form the cell.

The newly formed Parish Women’s Cell includes:

  • Coordinator: Dr U. J. Wanda Viegas
  • Secretary: Mrs. Filomena Pereira
  • Treasurer: Mrs. Cynthia D’Souza
  • Members: Advocate Rochelle Rizzeria Roseline Pacheco and Mrs. Suzie Rodrigues
  • Spiritual Member: Ms. Saviola Fernandes (Consecrated Virgin)

The Cell chose Santa Rita de Cascia as their patroness, recognising her as a figure all women can relate to—a daughter, wife, and mother who endured an abusive marriage and hostile surroundings, yet remained steadfast in her faith, becoming the Saint of impossible cases.

A meaningful prayer service led by Filomena Pereira featured a reading from John 20:1-2, 11–18, followed by a reflection by Fr. Francis Xavier. Drawing from the apostleship of Mary Magdalene, he urged women to become apostles in their communities, deepening the faith of others.

Elaine Dias, Diocesan Women’s Commission Coordinator, outlined the vision, mission, and goals of the Commission, encouraging active involvement through seminars, outreach, and collaborative growth. Dr. Wanda Viegas introduced the new team and addressed the 30 women present, sharing the Cell’s motto, three-year plan, and goals. She urged the group to “revive, rejuvenate, and rejoice” in their mission.

To lighten the atmosphere, Rizzeria conducted a group game, which was won by Mrs. Filomena Pereira. The evening concluded with cheerful group photographs and delicious homemade snacks shared among attendees.

The event held added significance as it coincided with the 400-year celebrations of St. Francis Xavier Church, making the establishment of Goa’s first Parish Women’s Cell a proud and historic milestone.
