Fr Babu Francis of Allahabad Diocese Shares Jail Ordeal, Urges Vigilance and Proper Documentation

Eluru, December 07, 2024: In a poignant and thought-provoking address, Fr. Babu Francis of the Allahabad Diocese shared his personal experience of being imprisoned for three months, highlighting the need for vigilance, caution, and proper documentation in Catholic institutions while addressing the National Lawyers Forum of Catholic Priests and Religious.

Fr. Francis recounted how his ordeal began when his staff member was caught by the police, prompting him to visit the police station to inquire about the situation. Despite warnings from others, Fr. Francis went to the police station, where he was confronted by a hostile group of people. He was subsequently arrested, detained, and imprisoned for three months.

Describing the harsh conditions in jail, Fr. Francis spoke of the dirty surroundings, poor food, and the emotional turmoil he endured. He shared how, for the first 15 days, he prayed fervently to be released, but later surrendered to God's will, asking to be freed when the time was right.

Reflecting on his experience, Fr. Francis highlighted three key lessons he learned: the importance of humility and not being overly confident, the need for vigilance and caution, and the crucial role of proper documentation in institutions.

Fr. Francis also expressed disappointment that, despite the Catholic Church's 150-year presence in the region and its numerous institutions, none of the people the church had helped over the years came to his aid during his imprisonment. He emphasized the need for Catholic institutions to maintain proper documentation and to be prepared for unexpected challenges.

Fr. Francis's powerful testimony served as a reminder to the Catholic community of the importance of humility, vigilance, and responsible stewardship.
