FIR Filed Against Influencer for Chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' in Meghalaya Church

Mawlynnong, Meghalaya, December 31, 2024: Meghalaya Police have registered an FIR against social media influencer Akash Sagar after a video showing him chanting "Jai Shri Ram" at the Church of Epiphany in Mawlynnong, East Khasi Hills, went viral. The video, which surfaced online earlier this month, prompted widespread condemnation from Christian organizations and activists, who allege it was a deliberate attempt to disrupt communal harmony in the Christian-majority state.

The complaint, filed by Shillong-based activist Angela Rangad, accused Sagar of trespassing into the altar area of the church and engaging in actions disrespectful to its sanctity. Rangad described the act as premeditated, aimed at inciting communal tensions and promoting a "majoritarian agenda." Following this, the Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF) and the United Christian Forum of North East India also condemned the act, calling it an infringement on religious rights and a provocation against minority communities.

In response, Akash dismissed the allegations in a now-deleted social media post, questioning the validity of the complaint and citing a Karnataka High Court ruling that dismissed charges in a similar case. Despite his defense, local leaders and religious organizations have urged authorities to take stringent action, emphasizing the need for sensitivity and respect in interfaith interactions, particularly in a region celebrated for its harmony.

The controversy comes amid heightened communal tensions nationwide, with the Supreme Court currently hearing an appeal related to religious slogans in places of worship. Christian groups have called on the state government to address such incidents firmly, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding communal peace in Meghalaya.
