Vatican, 6th May 2025: Behind every papal name is a story. For many Popes, their chosen name reflects personal devotion, theological vision, or homage to a saint or previous Pope.
Pope Paul VI chose his name to reflect his admiration for Apostle Paul, known for his evangelical fervor. Benedict XVI, formerly Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, referenced both Pope Benedict XV, known for his peacemaking during World War I, and St. Benedict of Norcia, the patriarch of Western monasticism.
Pope Francis, breaking with tradition, selected a name never before used. In a 2013 audience, he explained his inspiration came from St. Francis of Assisi, whom he admired for his dedication to peace, poverty, and creation. Likewise, Pope John XXIII chose the name John in memory of his father and his baptismal parish.
These choices are more than names; they are personal manifestos of the spiritual and pastoral mission the Pope wishes to undertake.
