Badyar, February 4, 2025: A media seminar titled "Cyber Sapiens: Growing Smart and Safe with AI in the Digital World" was held on Sunday, February 2, 2025, at St. Raphael Church, Badyar, under the Commission for Social Communication, Diocese of Mangalore. The seminar aimed to raise awareness among parents and children about the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cyber Crimes and digital media in everyday life.
Rev. Fr. Anil Ivan Fernandes, Diocesan Secretary for the Commission for Social Communication, served as the resource person. In his insightful session, Fr. Fernandes highlighted the transformative role of AI in education, entertainment, and communication. He addressed critical topics such as the impact of social media on mental health, managing screen time, the importance of digital footprints, and online safety measures for growing Cyber Crimes. He emphasised the need for ethical use of technology and encouraged parents to guide their children in using digital tools responsibly.
Rev. Fr. Roshan Crasta, Parish Priest of St. Raphael Church, in his address, underscored the urgent need for conscientisation on the potential risks and benefits of AI. He urged parents to foster open communication with their children about digital habits and online behaviour.
The seminar witnessed the active participation of around 80 parents along with their children. The interactive session allowed parents to voice their concerns about the digital challenges their children face, while children shared their online experiences.
The event concluded with a Q&A session, offering practical tips on creating a balanced digital environment at home. The seminar successfully highlighted the importance of growing smart and safe in today’s AI-driven world, grounded in ethical and spiritual values.
