Doors Sealed to begin the Papal Conclave for electing 267th pope

Vatican City, 7 May, 2025— With the final Cardinal Deacon having sworn the oath of secrecy, the Sistine Chapel has now been formally sealed, marking the solemn start of the conclave to elect the 267th pope of the Catholic Church.

The closing moments of the ceremony were steeped in tradition and symbolism. The Latin phrase “extra omnes” — meaning “everyone out” — echoed through the chapel, signalling the removal of all non-essential personnel. This ancient declaration signified the moment when the cardinal electors were left alone to begin their deliberations in strict confidentiality.

Among those exiting were official notaries, present to formally witness the proceedings, as well as various aides and attendants with designated roles. Once they departed, the chapel doors were ceremoniously closed, locked, and placed under guard, marking the formal commencement of the conclave.

Before voting could begin, the cardinals received a brief meditation — a moment of reflection and spiritual preparation. Following this, the final non-electors also withdrew, leaving the cardinal electors in complete seclusion to cast their first ballots later this evening.

As the doors of the Sistine Chapel shut behind them, so too did public access to the sacred process. With the world now watching and waiting, the College of Cardinals begins its historic task of selecting the next leader of the global Catholic community.
