CBCI Welcomes Election of Pope Leo XIV with Joy and Prayerful Support

New Delhi , 8 May 2025 — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed profound joy and gratitude at the election of the new Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost. In an official statement released today, the CBCI joined the global Catholic community in thanksgiving to God for granting the Church a new shepherd "after the pattern and image of His Son, Jesus Christ."

The Church in India has pledged unwavering loyalty and allegiance to Pope Leo XIV and assured His Holiness of its continued prayers. The bishops noted that they trust the Holy Spirit, who inspired the cardinal-electors in their choice, will continue to guide and strengthen Pope Leo XIV in his mission as the successor of St. Peter.

“The Church in India pledges its total loyalty and allegiance to the new Pope Leo XIV,” the statement read. “We assure His Holiness of our fervent prayers… for the good of the Catholic Church and for the well-being of the entire humanity.”

The CBCI also highlighted a historic milestone: four Indian Cardinals participated in the conclave, marking a significant moment in the Church’s history in India.
