Chhattisgarh, July 15, 2025: A peaceful Christian prayer gathering at a private residence in Korba district, Chhattisgarh, was allegedly disrupted by members of a Hindu fundamentalist group accompanied by police on July 13. Following the incident, the CSI Police Station in Korba issued a notice to the homeowners, Mr. Ramprasad and Mrs. Roopa Chauhan, questioning the legality of religious gatherings at their residence.
The notice sought clarification on whether the house was built on government land and if the construction and religious activities had been authorised by the appropriate authorities.
Responding to the notice, Mr. Ramprasad stated that he and his wife have lived in the house for 45 years, consistently paying taxes and maintaining utility connections in his name. He denied any involvement in religious conversions and clarified that the meeting held on 13 July was a family prayer session. According to him, members of the Bajrang Dal forcefully entered the house, verbally abused the women present, and took them to the police station.
Mr. Ramprasad expressed concern over the lack of prior investigation and called for legal action against those responsible for hurting the family's religious sentiments.
According to the United Christian Forum’s May 2025 Violence Monitor Report, Chhattisgarh ranked second in India for incidents of violence against Christians between January and April—recording 46 such cases, second only to Uttar Pradesh—reinforcing its status as one of the most hostile states toward Christian communities this year.
