Vatican City, 4 June, 2025 - During his weekly General Audience in the Vatican, Pope Leo XIV offered a message of encouragement, reminding the faithful that God never gives up on anyone and is always ready to welcome them with open arms—regardless of how late they respond to His call. Continuing his catechetical series on Jesus Christ Our Hope for the Jubilee Year, the Holy Father reflected on the depth of God's mercy and the true meaning of justice.
Citing the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard from the Gospel of St Matthew, Pope Leo highlighted how the landowner gives the same wage even to those who arrived at the eleventh hour. This, he explained, is not unfairness but generosity. “He didn’t look only at merit, but also at need,” the Pope stated, underscoring the immense mercy of God.
In his catechesis, the Pope said that the workers hired first were disappointed, unable to appreciate the kindness shown to the others. However, he noted that the landowner—symbolising God—personally called each worker, recognised their dignity, and wanted to pay them accordingly.
“God wants to give everyone His Kingdom,” Pope Leo said, “a life that is full, eternal, and joyful.” He stressed that Jesus does not rank people and gives all of Himself to anyone who opens their heart to Him.
The Pope acknowledged that modern Christians may wonder why they should begin working early if the reward is the same for all. He quoted St Augustine in response to such doubts: “Why then do you delay to follow the one who calls you, when you are sure of the reward but uncertain of the day? Be careful not to deprive yourself, through your delay, of what He will give you according to His promise.”
Before concluding, Pope Leo addressed the faithful, with a special message for young people: “Don’t wait, but respond with enthusiasm to the Lord who calls us to work in His vineyard.” He urged them not to postpone their response, saying, “Roll up your sleeves, because the Lord is generous and you won’t be disappointed!”
By working in God’s vineyard, the Pope affirmed, people will find an answer to the question many carry within them: What is the meaning of my life?
He concluded with a call to perseverance: “Let’s not be discouraged! Even in the dark moments of life, when time passes without giving us the answers we seek, let us ask the Lord to come out again and find us where we are waiting for Him. He is generous, and He will come soon.”
