Christian Forum of Bordumsa, Arunachal Pradesh, Conducts Peaceful Protest Against APFRA Act 1978

Don Bosco Rajanagar, 6 March, 2025: The Christian Forum of Bordumsa, in collaboration with St. Joseph Catholic Parish, Rajanagar, organised a peaceful protest against the Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA) 1978 on March 6. The protest, held in Changlang district, Arunachal Pradesh, witnessed the participation of nearly 5,000 Christians, including Catholics from St. Joseph’s Church, Christian brothers from Bordumsa, church leaders, and faithful from various denominations.

Understanding APFRA 1978: The Arunachal Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act (APFRA) 1978 was enacted to regulate religious conversions and prevent forced conversions. However, in practice, many perceive the law as being misused to target Christian communities and restrict their religious freedom. It requires individuals converting to another religion to report to district authorities, a provision often seen as indirectly discouraging conversions. This has created a challenging environment for religious minorities, particularly Christians, who frequently face discrimination and legal obstacles in practicing their faith.

Concerns Over Proposed Legislative Changes: There are growing fears that potential legislative amendments could impose stricter regulations on religious conversions, further marginalising Christian communities. Many worry that such changes may be used to intimidate pastors, missionaries, and lay faithful, restricting their fundamental rights.

A Unified Christian Protest: The peace rally was organized by Fr. Joseph Kindo SDB, Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s Church, Rajanagar, and Fr. Paul Panmei SDB, Principal of Don Bosco School, Rajanagar. The event saw active participation and coordination from parish council members, youth groups, women’s associations, and leaders of various Christian churches.

The rally began and ended with prayer services led by pastors and Salesian priests, invoking blessings on the movement. Church leaders, pastors, and community representatives delivered speeches opposing the APFRA Act and voicing concerns about potential legislative changes. They emphasised the need for religious freedom, constitutional rights, and peaceful coexistence.

The event was a significant step in raising awareness about the challenges faced by the Christian community in Arunachal Pradesh. The peaceful yet resolute protest sent a strong message to authorities on the importance of upholding religious freedom and protecting minority rights.
