Malkangiri, Odisha, June 25, 2025 : A coalition of Christian organisations, including the Council of Evangelical Churches in India (CECI), Progressive Christian Alliance (PCA), Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), Rastriya Christian Morcha (RCM), and Malkajgiri District Christian Manch (MDCM), visited Matapaka village in Odisha’s Malkangiri district following a violent attack on a Christian gathering.
During their visit, the delegation encountered disturbing scenes. “Christians in Matapaka were engaged in a prayer service to mark Seed Sowing Day — a traditional ritual seeking blessings for good crops,” Fr. Simon explained to the Catholic Connect Reporter, “As the prayer was ongoing, a mob of 300 to 400 people from nearby villages stormed the gathering and attacked them.” The violence, reportedly triggered by the Christians’ refusal to convert to Hinduism, left 13 individuals injured, with 20 seriously hurt. Seven remain hospitalised.
“No arrests have been made yet,” the delegation confirmed. “Even during our visit yesterday, the local police officer stated he was awaiting medical reports and a peace meeting before initiating action. The DIG today echoed the same stance.”
The legal team, which included Advocate Netesh Lal (Delhi High Court), Advocate Sonsingh Jhalli (ADF), and Advocate Satyananda Mahanandiya (Koraput District Session Court), demanded immediate arrests, questioning the authorities' delay. They described the assault as targeted and faith-based, with the attackers wielding sticks, sickles, and axes.
Fr. Bhupendra Khora of the PCA criticised the consistent inaction, calling the pattern of attacks against Christians “systemic” and “deeply disheartening.” Rev. Vijay Pusru added that the delay and attitude of law enforcement “make it seem like the victims are being treated as suspects.”
While the MDCM is actively supporting the victims with medical care and monitoring their recovery, Devendra Singh stressed the importance of law enforcement officials visiting the victims personally, hoping it would instil empathy and urgency in their response.
Addressing concerns around compensation and support, the delegation noted that while some leaders are handling the matter, much of the immediate help is coming from local residents and churches under the CECI.
Finally, Fr. Simon Digbal Tandi, Coordinator of the PCA, appealed directly to the authorities: “Act swiftly. Arrest the culprits and protect the constitutional rights of Christians in this region.” He also called upon the wider Christian community to stay vigilant and united: “If we sit silently, no right will be granted to us automatically. We must rise and defend our freedoms.”
