Cardinal Parolin to Inaugurate Church of the Baptism of the Lord in Jordan

Vatican, January 7, 2025: Pope Francis has appointed Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin as Pontifical Legate to preside over the consecration of the Church of the Baptism of the Lord in Jordan. The church is situated on the eastern bank of the River Jordan, a site where tradition holds that Jesus was baptized. The consecration ceremony, scheduled for January 10, coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Catholic Church’s annual pilgrimage to the site.

The Mass of Dedication of the church, which will be led by Cardinal Parolin, will be attended by prominent religious figures. These include Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, as well as the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries in the Holy Land for all Latin and Catholic churches. The event will also witness participation from civil authorities, representatives of other faith communities, and those dedicated to promoting religious freedom, human dignity, and global peace.

In a letter addressed to Cardinal Parolin, Pope Francis emphasized the profound significance of the event, noting that Christians in Jordan eagerly await the consecration of the church. The Holy Father also reflected on the Almighty God’s intention to unite people through faith and holiness, quoting the Second Vatican Council document Lumen Gentium. He further urged the Cardinal to encourage Jordanian Christians to strengthen their witness to Christ and to love their neighbors with renewed vigor.

The Church of the Baptism of the Lord was constructed with the oversight and donation of Nadim Muasher, a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, in memory of his son Ayman, who tragically passed away in a car accident near the Baptism site. The foundation stone for the church was laid by Pope Benedict XVI on May 10, 2009.
