Zambia’s Youth Urged to Embrace Synodality in Church Mission

Zambia, January 9, 2025: Fr. Christopher Kunda, the National Youth Coordinator for the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB), has called on young people in Zambia to actively participate in the Church’s mission of evangelizing people, emphasizing their vital role in fostering inclusivity and co-responsibility. Speaking to Vatican News, he underscored the importance of dialogue, collaboration, and the Synod on Synodality in engaging youth.

Fr. Kunda, who also serves as the Youth Coordinator for the Salesians of Don Bosco in Zambia, expressed hope that the inspiration from the Synod sessions at the Vatican would continue to empower young people to become active contributors to the Church’s mission of evangelization and service. He stressed the need for youth to embrace their responsibilities, not only within the Church but also in society, by caring for others and the environment.

Highlighting the role of synodality, Fr. Kunda explained that the Church thrives when everyone shares responsibility. “No single group of Christians owns the Church. Every member plays a unique and essential role,” he noted. This shared responsibility, he said, is key to creating a Christian community that prioritizes inclusivity, particularly for marginalized youth, including migrants, prisoners, and the underprivileged.

Fr. Kunda also emphasized the importance of youth representation in decision-making processes at all levels of the Church. He encouraged young people to embrace new ways of living out their faith in a Synodal Church. “The onus is on young people to step forward and be part of the mission. They must take ownership of their role in shaping the Church’s future,” he stated.

In conclusion, Fr. Kunda encouraged young people to integrate Synodality into their daily lives as a fundamental way of living and being the Church.

“The Synodal Church is a listening Church,” he said. “The youth must cultivate the virtues of listening and dialogue. They cannot remain passive observers; instead, they must roll up their sleeves and actively engage in the activities of the Church without waiting for an invitation. Their creativity is essential in building a truly Synodal Church that prioritizes inclusivity.”
