Cardinal Parolin Dismisses Speculation About Pope Francis’ Resignation

VATICAN CITY, February 23, 2025: Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin has dismissed speculation regarding Pope Francis’ resignation, calling such reports “unfounded.” In an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Saturday, Cardinal Parolin emphasised that the only matters of concern are the Pope’s health, his recovery, and his eventual return to the Vatican. The Holy Father has been hospitalised at Gemelli Hospital since February 14 due to a respiratory tract infection.

Addressing the atmosphere surrounding these rumours, Cardinal Parolin stated that he was unaware of any movements or discussions regarding the Pope’s resignation. He acknowledged that speculation and false reports are common in such situations but insisted there was no credible basis for such claims.

Cardinal Parolin, who recently visited Burkina Faso, mentioned that while he is available to visit Pope Francis at the hospital, there has been no need for it. He stressed that minimising visits allows the Pope to rest and recover more effectively. Updates from the hospital indicate that the Pope is responding well to treatment.

Similarly, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, rejected the idea of external pressure influencing a papal resignation. Speaking to the Argentine newspaper La Nación, he noted that certain groups have attempted to push for this in the past, but any decision regarding resignation would have to be entirely voluntary for it to be valid. He added that there is no heightened discussion about a potential successor and that the Pope’s health remains the main focus.

Vatican officials continue to reassure the public that Pope Francis is making steady progress, with no indication of an imminent resignation.
