KUMBHA, JHARKHAND, 22 May 2025 — The Diocese of Daltonganj has inaugurated a new Calvary in the remote village of Kumbha, located just 18 kilometres from the Uttar Pradesh border. This significant spiritual development comes as a result of the devotion and perseverance of 23 Catholic families who live peacefully alongside their non-Catholic neighbours in the village.
On a scenic hilltop in Kumbha, a newly constructed Way of the Cross featuring 14 crosses was solemnly blessed on 18 May. The installation was a grassroots effort, with villagers contributing their labour—often with their bare hands—to bring the vision to life.
Bishop Theodore Mascarenhas SFX of Daltonganj led the Eucharistic celebration, which was marked by reverence, unity, and joy. In his homily, the bishop emphasised the importance of resolving conflicts through dialogue and mutual understanding. Prior to the Mass, the faithful climbed the hill, singing hymns that glorified the cross, as the bishop blessed each of the 14 stations.
Fr. Sebastian Lakra, Parish Priest of the area, concelebrated the Mass. The event was further graced by the presence of local religious brothers, including Birbal, Arjun, James, and Raviranjan, who offered their support and prayers.
Though unable to attend due to health reasons, local MLA Anand Pratap Deo sent representatives to the occasion, acknowledging the spiritual significance of the new Calvary for the community.
This new spiritual site stands not only as a symbol of faith but also as a testament to the harmony and determination of a small Catholic community living on the periphery, yet deeply rooted in their devotion.
