Goa, January 23, 2026: Bishop Simião Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to 68 young faithful of Our Lady, Mother of the Poor Church, Tilamola, during a solemn Eucharistic celebration held on January 22.
In his homily, centred on the theme “Strengthened by the fullness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, let us give witness to Jesus,” Bishop Simião emphasised that Confirmation is not a “goodbye sacrament” but a commitment to remain closely connected to the Church. He called on the newly confirmed to actively bear witness to Christ in their daily lives, particularly within their families, society, parish community, and in their responsibility towards creation.
Highlighting the obedience and simplicity of Jesus, the Bishop encouraged the young faithful to live out their Christian witness at home through obedience, service, and mutual support. He urged them to contribute positively to society by practising good conduct and living responsibly, thereby promoting justice and harmony.
Stressing the importance of parish life, Bishop Simião invited the confirmed candidates to participate actively in parish associations and movements. He encouraged involvement in youth groups, catechetical ministry, and other church activities as concrete ways of strengthening faith and serving the community.
Turning to the theme of care for creation, the Bishop commended the parishioners for their concern for the environment. He appealed to the newly confirmed and the wider community to act as responsible stewards of God’s creation by using natural resources wisely, managing waste responsibly, and planting trees. He reminded the faithful that caring for the earth, our common home, is an essential dimension of Christian responsibility.
The Eucharistic celebration was concelebrated by Fr Aldrin D’Costa, Parish Priest, along with Fr Peter Raj and other priests. Catechist Concy Oliveira served as the liturgical commentator, ensuring the smooth conduct of the celebration. At the conclusion of the Mass, Fr Aldrin D’Costa expressed words of gratitude to Bishop Simião, the concelebrating priests, catechists, parents, and all those who contributed to the meaningful celebration.
The occasion marked a significant spiritual milestone for the young faithful, who were encouraged to carry forward the gifts of the Holy Spirit with commitment, responsibility, and active witness to Christ.
