Secunderabad, July 6, 2025 — A remarkable display of faith and craftsmanship unfolded at St Mary’s Basilica in Secunderabad (Archdiocese of Hyderabad) on 5 July, as Mr. Jainthan Francis unveiled the longest holy rosary in Asia, officially recognised by the Asia Book of Records.
The historic inauguration and blessing took place on 5 July morning in the basilica’s Adoration Hall, presided over by His Eminence Cardinal and Archbishop of Hyderabad, Anthony Poola.
This colossal holy rosary is a powerful symbol of devotion, comprising an astounding 2.5 lakh golden-coloured plastic beads and stretching an unprecedented 20,000 metres—equivalent to 20 kilometres. Each decade of the rosary contains 5,000 beads, contributing to the rosary’s total weight of 75 kilograms.
Asia Book of Records adjudicator Dr. Vasudha Ashoke officially confirmed the achievement, placing this unique creation alongside other significant faith-based records, including the largest handwritten Bible on a single page and the world’s largest holy cross.
Speaking about the milestone, Sharon, Diocesan Youth Secretary, emphasised the significance of the display for both the faithful and the wider community. “This rosary stands as a colossal tribute to prayer and devotion,” she said.
The rosary will remain open for public viewing on the 5th and 6th of July, giving parishioners and visitors a chance to witness what organisers describe as an extraordinary symbol of Catholic faith and perseverance.
The achievement has generated excitement among the faithful and is expected to attract significant attention from devotees and tourists alike.
“This is not just a record—it’s an invitation for deeper prayer and reflection,” said one parishioner, marvelling at the scale and spiritual purpose of the rosary.
St. Mary’s Basilica, one of the oldest and most prominent Catholic landmarks in the region, provided a fitting backdrop for the event. The basilica’s leaders hope the record-setting rosary will serve as both a spiritual inspiration and a testament to the power of faith-driven creativity.
With its immense size and devotional purpose, the rosary has secured its place in history, leaving an enduring legacy for the Church in India and beyond.
