Panjim, Goa, November 29, 2024: As the golden hues of dusk bathed the historic Bom Jesus Church in Old Goa, I found myself swept up in a tide of devotion today, as thousands of pilgrims thronged the revered site to pay homage to the relics of St. Francis Xavier.
This sacred ritual, which unfolds every decade, beckons pilgrims from far-flung corners of India and beyond, all united in their quest for spiritual enlightenment.
As I stepped into the hallowed precincts of the Bom Jesus Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, I felt the weight of history and reverence settle upon me. The soft, golden light that permeated the church seemed to whisper tales of the saint's extraordinary life and legacy.
From the majestic Bom Jesu Basilica, I wended my way to the Cathedral, the venerable See of the Patriarch of Goa, where the relic of St. Francis Xavier lay enshrined, awaiting the veneration of the faithful. As I drew closer to the glass-encased relics, I felt my heart swell with wonder and awe. The saint's remains seemed to emanate an aura of profound peace, as if the very essence of his being continued to inspire and uplift all who sought his intercession.
In that sublime moment, I felt an unshakeable sense of communion with St. Francis Xavier, as well as with the countless pilgrims who had preceded me in this sacred ritual. As I poured out my heart in silent prayer, seeking the saint's guidance and benediction, I felt an ineffable sense of peace and clarity descend upon me, as if the saint's presence was imbuing me with renewed purpose and direction.
As I prepared to take my leave, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the privilege of visiting this sacred site, thanks to the gracious invitation extended by the Pilar Fathers (SFX), who had invited me to preach at their annual retreat in Goa. I was accompanied on this pilgrimage by Frs. Carvalho and Bento of Delhi.
As pilgrims continue to flock to the historic churches to venerate the relics of St. Francis Xavier, they are met with meticulous arrangements that ensure a seamless and profoundly spiritual experience. From the moment they arrive, pilgrims are guided by clear signage and volunteers who provide directions and assistance with warm smiles. The church grounds are immaculately maintained, with designated areas for prayer, reflection, and rest.
To accommodate the vast throngs of pilgrims, a temporary infrastructure has been erected, featuring shade structures, seating areas, and restrooms. The arrangements are carefully designed to minimize congestion and ensure a smooth flow of pilgrims.
The church authorities have also made elaborate arrangements for the comfort and well-being of pilgrims. Buggies and wheelchairs are available for the sick, elderly, and physically challenged, all provided free of cost, thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers who offer their services with warm smiles. To facilitate the movement of pilgrims, a queue management system has been put in place.
The church authorities have also ensured the safety and security of pilgrims, deploying a team of security personnel and volunteers throughout the premises. This enables pilgrims to focus on their spiritual experience, unencumbered by concerns for their safety.
In every aspect, the meticulous arrangements reflect the church authorities' unwavering commitment to providing a safe, comfortable, and profoundly spiritual experience for pilgrims.
As news coordinator of the Catholic Connect I was glad to see its standee placed just outside the exit of the cathedral, where the relic is now placed.
