Wildfire Devastates Corpus Christi Catholic Church

Los Angeles, January 10, 2025: The Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Pacific Palisades, Los Angeles, was destroyed in a wildfire that ravaged the area this week, leaving only the church’s frame standing. In a heartfelt message shared on the parish website, Mgr. Liam Kidney expressed deep sorrow, sharing a picture of the charred remains and wrote, "I have no words. Our beautiful church... praying for my hometown, the LA Fire Department, and everyone affected by these horrific fires." He assured parishioners of his safety and urged prayers for the community.

The fire, part of the Palisades blaze spanning 15,800 acres, has displaced thousands, with 37,000 residents evacuated. The destruction marks a significant loss for the parish, which has been a cornerstone of the Catholic community since its founding in 1950.

The wildfire has also forced the temporary closure of Corpus Christi School, which educates children aged 5-14. A video on the school’s website shows the burning church, though damage to the school remains unconfirmed. Across Southern California, 65 Catholic schools have been closed as a precautionary measure due to the fires.

Archbishop José Horacio Gómez Velasco of Los Angeles issued a statement urging prayers for those affected by the fires and for the safety of firefighters battling the infernos. “My heart goes out to our neighbors who have lost their homes and livelihoods… May God keep all our brothers and sisters safe and bring an end to these fires!” he said. The Palisades fire, driven by hurricane-level Santa Ana winds and dry conditions, remains at 0% containment, along with four other major wildfires in the state.

As the parish community begins its long road to recovery, Mgr. Kidney’s closing words, “Siempre Adelante!” (“Always ahead!”), offer courage and hope amidst such challenging times.
