Western Region Women’s Commission Hosts Convention in Pune

Pune, 4 December, 2025 — More than 210 women from Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa came together on 8–9 November for the first Western Region Women’s Commission Convention at the Papal Seminary campus in Pune, a two-day gathering designed to strengthen women’s leadership, deepen reflection for the Jubilee Year 2025, and promote a shared commitment to justice, unity and faith-inspired service. Participants represented 13 dioceses across the region and all three rites of the Catholic Church.

The opening Eucharistic celebration was led by Bishop Bernard Lancy, who urged women to recognise their calling as voices for truth and justice, warning that silence or compromise in the face of wrongdoing harms both community and society. He encouraged participants to support one another, build collective strength, and become a source of light for others in challenging times.

In the inaugural session, Regional Secretary Sr. Annie reminded participants that women play a vital role as “mothers of faith and beacons of light”, and called for deeper listening within families, communities and parishes as part of the synodal journey. Bishop Lancy further encouraged women to use their gifts to foster unity and defend the rights of those denied justice, taking inspiration from Mary’s courage and attentiveness.

Sr. Asha Paul, National Secretary of the CBCI Commission for Women, delivered a strong appeal for women to step beyond limited roles and actively claim their place in leadership and decision-making. She noted that Christian women must speak out against injustice, stand with those who face persecution, and ensure their voices shape the Church and society.

Participants also visited MAHER for an outreach interaction and later joined in cultural presentations that showcased the diversity and creativity of the region’s women.

A major session led by Raynah Marise invited women to rediscover biblical figures such as Miriam, the midwives Shiprah and Puah, the daughters of Zelophehad, Ruth, Mary Magdalene and Phoebe, highlighting their courage, leadership and influence. The reflection encouraged participants to reclaim these qualities in their own lives and ministries.

Sr. Manjula from Ahmedabad Diocese explained the functioning of the Western Region Women’s Commission and urged participants to strengthen parish-level women’s units grounded in relationship, unity and transparency. She stressed the importance of outreach, inclusion and responsible stewardship.
